They're back and action fans around the world can hardly wait! With the theatrical release getting closer by the day, action cinema comes a step closer to total reignition from another spectacular lineup of genre legends, featuring the returning original all-star cast alongside some exciting new additions - kicking ass on both sides of the law!
Lionsgate reveal that in this sequel: "The Expendables are reunited when Mr. Church enlists them to take on a seemingly simple job. When things go wrong, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory, where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time - five tons of weapons-grade plutonium, more than enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that's nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary they seek revenge from"
This time helmed by director Simon West, the sequel is said to offer everything fans have come to love and expect, but in bigger, better doses! One thing's for sure, just seeing this even greater lineup onscreen together (not to mention Arnie, Bruce, Chuck & co loading up and joining in for the action), this will be a real crowd-pleaser.
There's little more I need to say because if you’re the target audience for this one, chances are you know the deal already! In short, we know what we’re getting (at least partly) and we can’t wait! What stands out for me is that looking at accounts from some of the guys involved, plus the hints we’re treated to in the trailer, it does look bigger, louder and will undoubtedly aim to raise the bar. This one is also said to bring more humour to the team, a point some felt lacked in the first film. Ultimately, with the same team of genre icons, and the cast now featuring Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Scott Adkins and others, they’re certainly taking the dream team concept even further. Who knows who’ll join them next?
Finally, whether you were a huge fan of the original and want to bridge the gap before The Expendables 2, or weren’t sold (as I know this represents a few!) be sure to check out The Expendables Extended Director’s Cut as it really gives an insight into Stallone’s vision for the first film and sets quite a different tone from the original cut. Overall it’s slicker, stronger and more satisfying. Plus there are some great extras including an intro by Stallone, an insightful short documentary on his career as a filmmaker, and more! You can pick up the Blu-ray here!
Anyway, back to the much-awaited sequel, the wait is nearly over and the UK Leicester Square premiere has been announced for Monday 13 August. Something tells me this will be the hottest ticket in town!
